Education historian Diane Ravitch will speak at Elmhurst College about solutions to the challenges facing American public schools.

ELMHURST – An American education historian will speak about the challenges facing the nation's school systems at Elmhurst College Tuesday.

Diane Ravitch has written more than 500 articles and reviews for scholarly publications on the subject of schools. Her most recent book, "The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice are Undermining Education" critiques today's most popular ideas for improving public schools and offers her own alternative solutions to privatization, standardized testing and the charter school movement.

Her lecture begins at 7 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, 190 Prospect Ave.

A book signing will follow Ravitch's talk. Admission costs $20 for the general public and is free for Elmhurst College students, faculty, staff and alumni. The lecture qualifies for continuing professional development units, and forms will be available at the event.
