GLEN ELLYN – A street improvement project planned for Lenox Road and Linden Street near Lake Ellyn Park in Glen Ellyn will now include designs for Chidester Avenue and Elm Street, resulting in a $79,320 increase to the village's contract with RHMG Engineers, the firm designing the project.
While plans for Lenox Road and Linden Street have been in development since last year, approval of the project by the Glen Ellyn Village Board of Trustees to begin construction has been delayed due to design and timing issues, extensive public feedback and a desire to continue dialogue with the park district, according to village records.
Village trustees approved including design work for Chidester Avenue and Elm Street between Lenox and Riford roads within the scope of the Lenox-Linden Project during the board's Aug. 26 meeting.
The additional streets are located near the original project area and were previously identified by the village for 2014 reconstruction.
"The combined project, I think, makes for a very attractive project from a number of perspectives," Village Professional Engineer Bob Minix said.
RHMG Engineers are a logical choice for the Chidester Avenue and Elm Street designs because of the firm's knowledge of the area and previous work experience in Glen Ellyn, Minix said.
"They know the issues in the area," he said. "The drainage in proximity to Lake Ellyn obviously is of very high concern. They know a lot about drainage; they're our primary consultant in that regard."
The Chidester-Elm designs are expected to address roadway, sidewalk, drainage and sewer issues, according to village records.
Athough the additional design work will likely total $79,320, village trustees approved setting aside $87,000 for the engineering services in order to cover a 10 percent contingency in case the project requires more work than expected.
Recommendations from the village's Capital Improvements Commission for Lenox Road and Linden Street include installing sidewalk and widening the roadway in certain areas.
The installation of diagonal parking on Lenox Road near Lake Ellyn Park was previously considered by commissioners, but the proposal was met with strong opposition from nearby residents due to safety concerns.
The Lenox-Linden recommendations from the Capital Improvements Commission are expected to be considered by the Village Board this fall, according to village records. The commission will develop recommendations for Chidester Avenue and Elm Street in early 2014 based on designs from RHMG Engineers.
Pending Village Board approval, construction on Lenox Road and Linden Street would not begin until after July 4, 2014, due to the roads' proximity to Lake Ellyn Park and its Fourth of July festivities. Work on Chidester-Elm would begin before that, allowing for a smooth transition into the Lenox-Linden improvements after the Fourth of July holiday, Minix said.
