BURR RIDGE – A Downers Grove man is accused of killing his 61-year-old mother in the parking lot of a Burr Ridge church early Thursday morning.

DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Burr Ridge Chief of Police John Madden announced Thursday that first-degree murder charges have been filed against Michael Zaky Bassaly, 27, of Downers Grove for killing his mother, Yvonne Zaky Bassaly.

Yvonne Zaky Bassaly was pronounced dead at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital at 1:42 a.m. Thursday after being shot in the head in the St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church parking lot, 15w455 79th St., in Burr Ridge, said Burr Ridge Deputy Chief Marc Loftus.

Loftus said police received a call about 1 a.m. in regards to the shooting. Upon arrival, Michael Zaky Bassaly was on the scene as the person who called 911 and was taken to the Burr Ridge Police Department to find out his relationship to the incident.

Loftus said this was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.

“This happened in the early morning with nobody else around so there's no danger to anybody at the church or the surrounding community,” Loftus said.

The church was closed Thursday morning along with the preschool that's associated with the church, Loftus said.

A silver Cadillac was towed away from the church parking lot about 9:50 a.m Thursday and taken to the Burr Ridge Police Department, Loftus said. The scene was then cleared and the parking lot was reopened to the church.

If the death is ruled a homicide, Loftus said “all signs point to yes” as being the first homicide in Burr Ridge since it was incorporated.

“There have been some in unincorporated areas that have since become Burr Ridge, but this is the first since Burr Ridge has been incorporated,” he said.

Zaky Bassaly is scheduled to appear in bond court at 8 a.m. Friday at the DuPage County Courthouse.
