Bond denied for Downers Grove man charged with murdering mother at Burr Ridge church
BURR RIDGE – Bond was denied Friday for the 27-year-old Downers Grove man accused of shooting his mother in the head Thursday in the St. Mark Coptic Orthodox Church parking lot, 15w455 79th St., in Burr Ridge.
Michael Bassaly, 27, is charged with first-degree murder for allegedly killing Yvone Zaky Bassaly, 62, according to the Burr Ridge Police Department and DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.
Yvonne Bassaly was pronounced dead at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital at 1:42 a.m. Thursday, said Burr Ridge Deputy Chief Marc Loftus.
Loftus said police received a call about 1 a.m. in regards to the shooting. Upon arrival, Michael Bassaly was on the scene as the person who called 911 and was taken to the Burr Ridge Police Department to find out his relationship to the incident.
The church was closed Thursday morning along with the preschool that's associated with the church, Loftus said. A silver Cadillac was towed away from the church parking lot about 9:50 a.m Thursday and taken to the Burr Ridge Police Department. The scene was then cleared and the parking lot was reopened to the church.
If the death is ruled a homicide, Loftus said “all signs point to yes” as being the first homicide in Burr Ridge since it was incorporated.
“There have been some in unincorporated areas that have since become Burr Ridge, but this is the first since Burr Ridge has been incorporated,” he said.
Bassaly's case is due back in court Sept. 9.
