York's Claudia Zerdin bumps the ball against Waubonsie Valley during the Invitational held at Benet Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013.

ELMHURST – The Dukes are off to a 3-4 start to the season, but that record is a bit deceptive.

York has three losses to Benet, the two-time defending Class 4A state champs, that came in a six day span. The Dukes lost to the Redwings twice at the Benet Invite, where York placed second after losing to the hosts in the final, and lost a regular season match to Benet on Wednesday.

Senior outside hitters Amy Nosek and Claudia Zerdin were on the Benet all-tournament team along with sophomore libero Halle Truett.

The Dukes have some size. Nosek, Liz Pronove and Molly Schlecht give the Dukes three 6-foot players to provide a strong block. Seniors Nosek and Schlecht are three-year varsity players.

Senior setter Rachel Iverson returns as the team’s primary setter. The coach’s daughter is in her third year on varsity and second as a starter.

Freshman Sarah Rose, younger sister of former York standout and current Western Michigan volleyball player Caroline Rose, has earned playing time in early matches.
