Volleyball preview: IC in mix for 2A finals
ELMHURST – A drop from Class 3A to Class 2A makes IC Catholic a legitimate state title contender this fall.
Senior leaders Kim Martino, Delaney D’Amore and Rory Manion form a solid core. Martino is a three-year all-conference pick while D’Amore and Manion are also all-conference returners. Martino and Delaney were AAU All-Americans as juniors.
“This year’s team has very competitive athletes who have a good team chemistry and a strong desire to be successful,” said IC coach Jean Field, who is in her 39th season coaching IC.
Molly Manion and sophomore Kerry Mulligan will lead the Knights’ defensive effort. Newcomers Frannie Cervone, Hannah Hartnett and Claudia Koch should be in the mix for playing time.
“I think the seniors are going to get a lot of the publicity, but it’s how well the other kids do in raising their level,” Field said. “They’re all very capable of doing that.”
The Suburban Christian Blue has plenty of top level talent, starting off with nationally ranked St. Francis. After that one of IC’s goals was to beat out Chicago Christian, Rosary and Marian Central for second place in the conference.
