My office is a hot commodity lately.
It’s not me they want – it’s the space.
Most evenings and weekends this summer, supervisors and our human resources representative, Chris, have been using my office and any available meeting space for interviews and training for the many staff positions created by the new Fountain View Recreation Center opening this fall.
It’s so fun to see all these new faces. It’s also a great example of how our park district can be an economic generator in the community. At a time when not a lot of building was going on, we were able to begin construction on the new rec center and several park projects (thank you, voters!).
These projects gave local contractors work and building suppliers orders. The workers coming in to town, sometimes 100 or more per day, spent money in local stores, restaurants and gas stations, providing a nice little boost for local businesses.
Now that the building is almost done, we are hiring lots of new staff – the vast majority of whom are local residents. Five full-time and more than 100 part-time new positions were created for lifeguards, fitness and swim instructors, personal trainers, service desk staff and custodians. Operating the building also will boost local businesses in the form of supplies and services.
Our goal is to make this building self-sustaining. People will pay to swim, exercise, take lessons and play sports there. We’ll use that money to pay the staff and suppliers. The staff and suppliers now will have income to spend on local goods and services. We get healthier residents and a more prosperous community. It’s a big cycle of win-win for everyone.
We still have several openings for fitness, swim, custodial and other jobs. These are fun, flexible positions that are close to home and can lead to lifelong passions and careers. A complete list is available on our website at www.csparks.org.
