Football preview: Just making postseason won't cut it for Hinsdale South

DARIEN – Hinsdale South's football team ended a long playoff drought when it made the postseason last year. The Hornets are hoping that experience can translate into a West Suburban Gold conference title, another playoff berth, and  a trip to the state finals in November.

A long dry spell without a playoff berth ended last season, but South went out in the first round. Getting back to the postseason is a primary goal, and last year's playoff performance serves as a motivator.

"I feel if we make the playoffs this year we're going to go far because now we know what it's like in the playoffs. We know what it takes," quarterback Jake Czajkowski said.

NEW SLINGER: QB Jake Czajkowski will take over at quarterback for the graduated DJ Deolitsis, and after a full summer of 7-on-7 events and more than two weeks of preseason practice, he's ready to fill that role.

"Jake's a real smart guy. He's like Ivy League-type material so the mental aspect of things clicks right away," head coach Mike Barry said. "Plus last year, we were fortunate enough that he got a lot of reps late in games. So though he's new to being a starter, he's not new to the quarterback position."

DEVELOPING 'D': South's defense did pitch two shutouts last fall, but six times the unit allowed teams to score 21 or more points, including five times in the final five games. Team captain and defensive lineman Anthony Riskus said the front four is ready to do its part to bring those numbers down.

"Our D-line play is looking good," Riskus said. "We've improved a lot of the little stuff. And we have a sophomore [Josh King] on the line who never played D-line before this year so he's gotten a lot better. He's picking it up pretty naturally."
