WHAT TO WATCH
BROKEN RECORD: Before each of the past few seasons, coach Chad Hetlet has said that the current Hilltoppers team is the fastest he had been around. Looks like the 2013 version might top them all, especially at the running back position and in the defensive secondary.
"I swear we get faster every year," Hetlet said. "We've never been this fast."
NOTHING BUT SUCCESS: As has been the case recently, this year's senior class has known virtually nothing but winning. After posting 8-1 marks as both freshman and sophomores, they were part of the undefeated 14-0 squad last fall.
"There is good leadership there and they have good ability," the coach said. "These seniors have a take-care-of-business mentality."
NEXT MAN UP: Glenbard West lost a host of talented players from last year's state champion team but there are others waiting in the wings to fill those holes. On offense, Drew Vogg takes over at quarterback for a unit that lost top receiver Nathan Marcus but returns standout running back Scott Andrews. Defensively, Hayden Carlson, Jordan Hassan and Grant Greeno lead an inexperienced group. One player to keep an eye on is Devante Toney who, after playing running back in 2012, will see a lot of time at nose tackle.
"We had a pretty good offseason. I kept waiting for the kids to be complacent but I haven't really seen it. I'm happy with that. It was a good offseason as far as work and where the kids are at now, I feel good."
