WESTERN SPRINGS – Lyons Township High School students at both campuses were sent home early today after South Campus, in Western Springs, and North Campus, in La Grange, lost power this morning.

LT's South Campus lost power today at 11:06 a.m., according to an LT spokeswoman.

Power was restored to the building around noon, but it came back on too late for officials to reverse the decision to send students home early. According to information posted on the LTHS web site, ComEd told school officials power would be off for several hours.

LT officials said that buses would be arriving at both campuses to take students home at 12:30 p.m.

A ComEd spokesperson said the outage was caused by a power lockout, similar to when a circuit breaker trips. Both campuses were affected because they are on the same circuit. Power was restored in 40 minutes, the spokesperson said.

Without power, school officials said lunches could not be served, which is required by school code. The fire alarm system was also offline and buses were en route, school officials posted for the reasons class was cancelled.

All athletic and co-curricular after school activities were cancelled for the day. Adult education classes and driver's education sessions were also cancelled.

School officials said a planned Freshman Parent Orientation tonight was cancelled, but will be rescheduled.

The first day of school was Monday.
