ELMHURST – An Elmhurst musician who claimed he and his band opened for the Beatles has since admitted he made up the story.

Gary Goldberg spoke at the Elmhurst Historical Museum Aug. 15 about his music career as front man for the Cave Dwellers, a Chicago rock band. Goldberg claimed his band opened for the Beatles at a Comiskey Park show in 1965.

According to media reports, former bandmates confronted him during his presentation, and he admitted the band never opened for one of the most famous rock acts of all time.

“The museum regrets any misrepresentation of fact that was associated with the appearance of Gary Goldberg here at the museum,” said Brian Bergheger, director of the Elmhurst Historical Museum.

Bergheger said the museum makes every effort to fact check the content for it’s exhibits, programs and publications. He would not comment on any material Goldberg presented before or during his presentation at the museum.

Goldberg did not return calls for comment.
