Fort Hood shooter found guilty in Army base killings that included Bolingbrook native

BOLINGBROOK – A military court found Nidal Malik Hasan guilty Friday of shooting and killing 13 people, including Bolingbrook native Michael Pearson, and injuring dozens of others at Fort Hood Army post in Texas in November 2009.

Hasan, 42, an American-born Muslim and military psychiatrist, was convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted murder, according to media reports.

He acted as his own attorney and could receive the death penalty at sentencing.

Pearson graduated from Bolingbrook High School in 2006, and enlisted in the Army about a year before the shooting.

Former District 365-U Superintendent Phillip Schoffstall said the day after the shooting that Pearson “was a good student and a good citizen who loved art and music while in school.”

Hasan told the court he "switched sides," and was waging jihad against the United States because of U.S. aggression against Muslims, according to media accounts.
