Learning differences activist to speak at Elmhurst College

ELMHURST – The first speaker in Elmhurst College's Education in Crisis lecture series is the co-founder and president of a nonprofit for students with learning differences.

Jonathan Mooney is dyslexic and didn't learn to read until he was 12. He was once labeled "severely learning disabled," but now holds an honors degree in English from Brown University.

Mooney's lecture, "We're Not Broken: Empowering Students with Learning Differences," is the first in a yearlong series at Elmhurst College that will look at the challenges facing American education. Several of the lectures, including Mooney's, will qualify as continuing professional development units for educators.

His talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 5 at Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel.

Admission is $20 for the public and free for Elmhurst College students, faculty, staff and alumni. Tickets are available at www.elmhurst.edu/tix.
