Grand Prix draws dozens of racers, spectators
VILLA PARK – More than 200 bicyclists came to Villa Park last weekend to participate in the Villa Park Grand Prix bike race, which was sponsored by RDS Cycling.
On race day, there were 11 categories of bicyclists who were divided by age, ability and gender. The main race of the day was the men's professional category featuring 26 racers traveling at speeds of 35 mph. The winner of this category was Robert White of Brown Deer, Wis.
Members of the Villa Park Police Department and its high school Explorers unit helped keep the race course clear from traffic, and two paramedics from the Villa Park Fire Department were at the race to provide medical treatment, if necessary. No competitors were brought to the hospital, but seven were treated for minor injuries.
