Elmhurst police to stop cars at checkpoint this weekend

Published: Friday, Aug. 23, 2013 10:30 a.m. CST

ELMHURST – As part of a year-long grant to enforce DUI and seatbelt laws, the Elmhurst Police Department will increase patrols this weekend.

An Illinois Department of Transportation grant will allow extra officers to be on patrol and look for impaired drivers and seatbelt violations. The overnight hours are the most dangerous and extra officers will be on patrol then. The current grant period began last week and will continue through Labor Day weekend.

In addition to the extra patrols, Elmhurst police will conduct a roadside safety checkpoint from 11:30 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday. The checkpoint will be on a major roadway in Elmhurst, and officers will stop motorists to check for violations.

The police department encourages drivers to buckle up and to make alternative driving arrangements if they plan on drinking during Labor Day activities.
