Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com Wheaton Warrenville South's Kelly Anderson will be the Tigers' top golfer this season as they aim for another team trip to the state tournament.

Girls golfers from across the area are on the course for the 2013 season. The season has just started, but the goal for individuals and teams throughout the state is to make the trek to the Decatur area Oct. 18 to 19 for the Class A and AA state championship tournaments.

Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers

Conference: DuPage Valley

Home course: Arrowhead Golf Club, 26W151 Butterfield Road, Wheaton

2012 results: 10th in Class AA

Coach: Art Tang

Top golfer:

Kelly Anderson, jr.

What to watch: With the graduation of nine seniors from the 2012 Tigers team that broke into the top-10 in Class AA, coach Art Tang said it may be safe to call this a rebuilding year for his squad.

One player Wheaton Warrenville South does return is junior Kelly Anderson, who shot a 78 at the Burlington Central sectional before finishing in a tie for 40th place at the state meet (the state meet was shortened to one round due to the weather).

Wheaton North Falcons

Conference: DuPage Valley

Home course: Arrowhead Golf Club, 26W151 Butterfield Road, Wheaton

2012 results: 4-6 dual meet record

Coach: Karen Calabrese

Top golfers:

Caitlin Berry, sr.

Mikayla Harrington, jr.

Allie Leone, sr.

Annie Carlisle, sr.

Samira Tungare, so.

What to watch: The Falcons were on the brink of advancement to a Class AA sectional in 2012, but instead settled for fourth-place at the regional, four strokes behind West Chicago.

Wheaton North had a pair of individual sectional qualifiers and one of those, Caitlin Berry, returns to lead the squad this fall.

“We don’t have anyone that is going to be posting low scores on a consistent basis,” said coach Karen Calabrese, “but I think with some work we can have several girls posting good enough scores to keep us in the mix. We have a really nice group of girls that hopefully are ready to put in some work so we can be competitive.”

St. Francis Spartans

Conference: Suburban Christian

Home course: Cantigny, 27W270 Mack Road, Wheaton

2012 results: 6-4 dual meet record, 4th in regional

Coach: Matt Walsh

Top golfers:

Caroline Bland jr.

Caroline Pins sr.

What to watch: A year ago, St. Francis missed out on advancing to a Class A sectional as a team by seven strokes, placing fourth at the Johnsburg regional.

The Spartans have lost their top four players from that squad to graduation, including a pair of sectional qualifiers.

This year’s team will feature 14 players on the roster and is expected to be led by Caroline Bland and Caroline Pins.

West Chicago Wildcats

Conference: Upstate Eight

Home course: St. Andrews, 2241 Route 59, West Chicago

2012 results: 3rd in regional, 10th in sectional

Coach: Mike Cain

Top golfers:

Hanna Netisingha sr.

Tessa Dittmann sr.

Amanda O’Mahoney sr.

Haley Carney sr.

Ellyssa DiRado jr

Alex Dimas jr.

What to watch: The Wildcats qualified for the Class AA Burlington Central sectional a year ago, placing 10th in that competitive event.

The squad did have a state qualifier in senior Hanna Netisingha, who returns this fall after coming in 56th place at the state meet.

“She worked hard this summer,” said coach Mike Cain. “She is hitting the ball further, a club further.”

Also back are fellow seniors Tessa Dittmann and Amanda O’Mahoney, both of whom competed in the state series last year.

“Last year was the best team I’ve ever had,” the coach said, “and this year we should be almost as good.”

Wheaton Academy Warriors

Conference: Suburban Christian

Home course: Pheasant Run, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles

Coach: Haley Martin

Top golfer:

Hailey Farmer so.

What to watch: Hailey Farmer qualified for a Class A sectional as a freshman and will try to duplicate that feat in her second season.

Glenbard West Hilltoppers

Conference: West Suburban Silver

Home courses: Village Links of Glen Ellyn and Glendale Lakes Golf Club

2012 results: 2nd in regional, 6th in sectional

Coach: John Karpowicz

Top golfers:

Morgan Adair sr.

Claire Graham jr.

Emma Klimala sr.

Grace Lupo sr.

Erin Spiech sr.

What to watch: Karpowicz takes over the Hilltoppers program after being an underlevel coach last year. He inherits a squad that advanced to the Class AA Burlington Central sectional as a team, where they finished sixth.

Glenbard West did have a state qualifier in Ellen Nighbor, but she has graduated.

The Hilltoppers do return five major contributors in seniors Emma Klimala, Morgan Adair, Grace Lupo and Erin Spiech along with junior Claire Graham.

Glenbard South Raiders

Conference: Metro Suburban

Home course: Western Acres, 2400 Butterfield Road, Lombard

2012 results: 1st in Metro Suburban Conference, 5-8 dual meet record

Coach: Kevin Berner

Top golfers:

Abby Johnson jr.

Lilly Mittenthal sr.

What to watch: The Raiders finished sixth at the challenging Class AA York regional last fall but did have a pair of individual sectional qualifiers, including Lilly Mittenthal, who returns to the squad this fall.

Abby Johnson is also expected to be a major contributor for a Glenbard South team that brings back a lot of experience.

“This team has a chance to qualify for sectionals as a team,” said coach Kevin Berner. “I only lost one senior, and the ball striking has improved with this bunch. The focus this year will be on putting. As this team has grown a year, it is time to putt competitively.”
