The 2013 boys golf season is underway and as teams across the area tee it up, the ultimate destination is the Bloomington-Normal area Oct. 18 to 19 for the state championship tournaments.

Wheaton North Falcons

Conference: DuPage Valley

Home course: Arrowhead, 26W151 Butterfield Road, Wheaton

2012 results: 7-4 dual meet record, 4th in the DVC

Coach: Mike Pribaz

Top golfers:

Ben Shadid, jr.

Michael Suazo, jr.

Charlie Vasbinder, jr.

Matt Winkelmann, jr.

What to watch: Wheaton North is coming off a very solid 2012 season, which saw the Falcons finish in fifth place at the Class 3A West Chicago regional.

Last year the squad had three sectional qualifiers in Michael Suazo, Matt Winkelmann and Ben Shadid, all of whom return as juniors this fall. Suazo later advanced to the state meet, where he finished in a tie for 33rd place. Another junior who will contribute is Charlie Vasbinder.

“Hopefully the hard work that this team has put in will pay off this season,” said coach Mike Pribaz. “This group is as dedicated, talented, and fun to be around as any I have had here at Wheaton North.”

Wheaton Warrenville South Tigers

Conference: DuPage Valley

Home course: Arrowhead, 26W151 Butterfield Road, Wheaton

2012 results: 6-3 dual meet record, 3rd in the DVC

Coach: James Selleck

Top golfers:

Bailey Dahlquist, jr.

Tommy Dale, jr.

Will Denman, sr.

Will Kelly, jr.

Colin McCaffrey, sr.

Christian Westergaard, sr.

What to watch: Coming off a successful 2012 season, the Tigers bring back a talented and veteran core. Wheaton Warrenville South just missed out on advancing to the sectional as a team last fall, coming in fourth place, six strokes out of the top-3.

The Tigers did have five sectional qualifiers — Christian Westergaard, Tommy Dale, Colin McCaffrey, Bailey Dahlquist and Will Denman — all of whom return this fall.

St. Francis Spartans

Conference: Suburban Christian

Home course: Cantigny, 27W270 Mack Road, Wheaton

2012 results: 7-3 dual meet record

Coach: Greg Baresel

Top golfers:

Dan Mochel, sr.

Andy Oleniczak, sr.

John Stolte, sr.

Dan Zurawski, sr.

What to watch: The Spartans are coming off a successful 2012 campaign that saw the team place fourth at the Class 2A Montini regional, six strokes behind a sectional qualifying berth.

The best news for the St. Francis comes from the fact that each of the team’s five individual sectional qualifiers returns this fall, including the senior duo of John Stolte and Dan Mochel, who later advanced to the state meet. Mochel placed 55th at state while Stolte was 74th. Johnathan Nocek is also back.

Wheaton Academy Warriors

Conference: Suburban Christian

Home course: Pheasant Run, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles

2012 results: 9th in Class 2A

Coach: Scott Broman

Top golfers:

Kyle Bertsche, fr.

Grant Gosden, so.

Matt Hamm, sr.

Zack Spear, jr.

Bobby Teevans, sr.

What to watch: The Warriors continued their golfing excellence a year ago, coming in ninth as a team in Class 2A. From that group, Wheaton Academy will return four of its top six individuals, including sophomore Grant Gosden, who was the conference and regional champion before finishing in a tie for 20th place at state. Also back in the fold are Zack Spear, Bobby Teevans and Matt Hamm.
