Erica Benson - ebenson@shawmedia.com Glenbard North's Samantha Yocum is one of four seniors that will provided leadership and stability for the Panthers this season.

Girls golfers from across the area are on the course for the 2013 season. The season has just started, but the goal for individuals and teams throughout state is to make the trek to the Decatur area Oct. 18-19 for the Class A and AA state championship tournaments.

Glenbard North Panthers

Conference: DuPage Valley

Home course: Glendale Lakes, 1550 President St., Glendale Heights

2012 results: 8th in regional

Coach: Dino Petrin

Top golfers:

Denise Dejes, sr.

Bridget Everson, sr.

Hayley Jefferson, sr.

Samantha Yocum, sr.

What to watch: The Panthers return a solid core of four senior swho are looking to build off the momentum generated in 2012.

Glenbard North came in eighth at the York regional last fall and had a sectional qualifier in Bridget Everson, who returns to lead the team this season.

“Last year at the DVC meet we scored under 400 for the first time in team history,” said coach Dino Petrin. “Bridget gained momentum at the end of the season and qualified for sectionals, and at sectionals she turned in an 88 and missed qualifying for the state tournament by two shots. Last season’s postseason success should help us this season.”

Also back are Samantha Yocum, Denise Dejes and Hayley Jefferson.

“The four seniors have worked very hard the past three years and are ready to help the team,” Petrin said. “Our top four players should be able to carry the load. Since we are a fairly new program, we are looking to grow the program to reach a level of consistency that eventually puts us in the top half of the DVC.”

The Panthers have a few goals in mind, including finishing in the middle of the pack in conference as well as breaking the 400 mark at all of the team’s tournaments.

“We can achieve these goals by not sweating the small stuff,” Petrin said, “which means forgetting bad holes and shots instead of trying to make up those missed opportunities. Our focus will be managing poor shots by recovering instead of forcing the issue. If our top players can recover from missed shots then we will have a successful season because the talent in there.”
