The 2013 boys golf season is underway and as teams across the area tee it up, the ultimate destination is the Bloomington-Normal area Oct. 18 to 19 for the state championship tournaments.

Downers Grove North Trojans

Conference: West Suburban Silver

Home course: Downers Grove Park District, 2420 Haddow Ave., Downers Grove

2012 results: 6th in regional

Coach: Jeff Naruszewicz

Top golfers:

Kevin Aguayo jr.

Carter Bernier sr.

Jonathan Blanchard sr.

Gytis Blinstrubas so.

Nathan Eisenhut sr.

James Graham jr.

Tristan Leger jr.

Bowen Marks so.

Colin Michels jr.

MJ Thompson sr.

What to watch:

The Trojans were on the verge but not quite there in terms of making it out the regional round of the 2012 postseason and into the sectional. Make that goal No. 1 for the young Trojans this fall.

"We face strong competition all year, both in conference and out, and that competition should help us toughen up for the [postseason]," head coach Jeff Naruszewicz said.

North played in the Naperville Central invite Monday and was scheduled to face 2012 regional champ Neuqua Valley on Aug. 26. Defending state champ Hinsdale Central (Sept. 24) and 2012 third-place finisher Lyons Township (Sept. 5) are also on the slate.

"This is a team that should be significantly stronger at the end of the season than it is at the beginning," Naruszewicz said. "It should be a fun year."

Downers Grove South Mustangs

Conference: West Suburban Gold

Home course: Village Greens of Woodridge, 1575 W. 75th St., Woodridge

2012 results: 7th in regional

Coach: Terry Tiesman

Top golfers:

Nick Barnabey sr.

John Franklin sr.

Kevin Gallagher sr.

Mark Kasanoff sr.

Jack Korzon sr.

Jason Krupa sr.

What to watch:

Terry Tiesman takes over for the retired Jay Baum as head coach and inherits a senior-laden team that was just a few strokes away from earning a spot in the sectional tournament last fall.

While the Mustangs did not advance as a team in the 2012 postseason, Mark Kasanoff did make it to the sectional. The team will look to follow his lead this fall, and it will be tested in contests with Glenbard West, Naperville North and 2012 state champ Hinsdale Central before the postseason arrives.

Westmont Sentinels

Conference: Interstate Eight Conference

Home course: Willow Crest Golf Club, 3500 Midwest Road, Oak Brook

2012 results: 9th in regional

Coach: Frank Cyrus

Top golfers:

Devin Alexander sr.

Adam Berg sr.

Gavin Johnson jr.

Jacob Jones sr.

Sam Montalbano sr.

What to watch:

Devin Alexander was a sectional tournament qualifier last fall and returns this season, as do 2012 varsity players Adam Berg, Jacob Jones and Sam Montalbano. With the group returning, the goals are clear.

"I'd like to see us finish in the top half of the conference," head coach Frank Cyrus said.

Alexander advanced out of the regional last fall but came up short on the sectional. Cyrus said Alexander has put in the necessary work to take the next step.

"He's a great kid and he's worked really hard on his game," the coach said. "I'd like the team to do as well as it can throughout the season, and I hope Devin can qualify for state this year."
