BOLINGBROOK – Days are getting shorter, local schools have resumed classes and swimsuit displays are being swapped out for Halloween costumes.

Summer is waning, and the Bolingbrook Park District is sending it off in style.

Summer’s Last Blast, the park district’s 16th annual end-of-the-season celebration, will be Saturday at Volunteer Park and will offer free and affordable family activities.

Bolingbrook Park District Executive Director Ron Oestreich believes the daylong event is a perfect way to give back to the community and showcase park district classes and activities.

“It’s our chance to highlight all the services that the Bolingbrook Park District offers and it’s a great way to show to the residents how much we care about them,” Oestreich said.

The 2013 event kicks off with Parkie’s 5K Family Fun Run/Walk at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Complex, 200 S. Lindsey Lane. Advance registration cost is $20 for adults and $18 for children ages 6 to 17 years; day of registration fee is $24 and $22, respectively. Children 5 years old and under can participate for free.

Part of the generated proceeds will be donated to The One Fund, a relief organization formed by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino to assist the victims and families affected by the Boston Marathon bombings

Shortly after the race, a free fishing derby will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at Volunteer Park north, adjacent to the Bolingbrook Recreation and Aquatic Complex.

Also, the park district is offering discounted swimming rates at Pelican Harbor Aquatic Park during Summer’s Last Blast. Admission is $1 for residents and $5 for non-residents, with proceeds benefitting the Bolingbrook Park District financial aid program.

The rest of the celebration will be held from noon to dusk at Volunteer Park south and will include a variety of free activities.

Microreality Stock Car Racing returns to Last Blast, as well as the “Raise a Stink raffle and Dancefest. A car show, petting zoo, a dunk tank, inflatables, live music performances, local food vendors, and an evening fireworks display, which will start around 8:30 p.m. and be shot off from nearby Jane Addams Middle School.
