Babicz: Golden Eagles prioritize safety during 50th anniversary

Community voice

Since 1963, the Glen Ellyn Park District’s Golden Eagles football program has provided players in grades three through eight with a supervised, organized and safe atmosphere in which to learn and develop the fundamentals of tackle football.

A founding franchise of the Bill George Youth Football League, the Glen Ellyn Golden Eagles are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2013 with a nod to the past. All teams and players will be wearing throwback-style uniforms with a special commemorative patch to celebrate the season. In addition, 50th anniversary merchandise will be available for purchase during games.

While we celebrate the past, the program also recognizes the importance of keeping players safe on the field. In partnership with Athletico, all players in the 103 pound through senior levels were offered the opportunity to partake in baseline concussion testing through ImPACT Applications Inc., a leader in concussion management.

The initial test measures neurocognitive functions of the brain and is administered prior to beginning contact for the season. Should an injury occur, players are re-tested and the results are compared to the initial test before determining whether the player will be cleared to return to play.

The Golden Eagles football program also has replaced its inventory of helmets during the past two years, upgrading to the newest that Riddell has to offer and has implemented USA Football’s Heads Up program to teach proper tackling.

With the support of the coaching staffs of Glenbard South and Glenbard West high schools, the Golden Eagles program lays the groundwork for success after players graduate from the program.

For those who may be too young to participate in the tackle program, flag football is available for grades one and two and cheerleading is offered for girls in grades two through eight.

Make plans now to join us during our anniversary season. Home games begin the weekend of Aug. 31 and are at Newton Park.
