Police to target drunk drivers through Labor Day

RIVERSIDE – In a campaign that began on Friday and will continue through Labor Day, Riverside police will be out in force as part of the annual Illinois Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown on drunk drivers.

The statewide crackdown will also include a focus on making sure drivers are wearing their seat belts.

Riverside police said they will be aggressively looking for drunk drivers during the crackdown, in addition to ticketing seat belt law violators – in both front and back seats.

Riverside police reported that holidays, such as Labor Day, tend to be particularly dangerous as people celebrate and consume too much alcohol before getting behind the wheel of their vehicle.

Riverside Chief of Police Tom Weitzel cited research in a news release that he said shows that campaigns like Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over reduce drunk driving fatalities by as much as 20 percent.

The law enforcement crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
