VILLA PARK – Two essay contests sponsored annually by VFW posts across the country are now open to entries from students.

Villa Park's VFW Post 2801 and its Ladies Auxiliary are sponsoring the Voices of Democracy and Patriot's Pen essay competitions, which are open to students in local middle schools and high schools. Prize money is available for the winners of these contests.

Voices of Democracy is an oral essay contest for students in high school. This year's theme is "Why I'm Optimistic About Our Nation's Future." Students should prepare oral essays between three and five minutes and record them onto CDs.

The Patriot's Pen Program is a written essay competition for students in grades six, seven and eight, and the theme is "What Patriotism Means To Me." Students must prepare essays between 300 and 400 words.

All essay submissions are due by Nov. 1, and contest rules are available online at vfw.org/community.

Local winners selected by VFW Post 2801 can advance to the district, state and national competitions.
