Matt Mrazek catches a pass as receivers drill during Lyons Township practice Monday in Western Springs.

WESTERN SPRINGS – Matt Mrazek will be one of few players on Lyons Township to play both ways. Mrazek will play safety and use his size and strength to provide a big target at wide receiver. After starting on the LT basketball team in the winter, Mrazek is a captain for the football team.

Santaromita: How excited are you for Week 1 against Warren?

Mrazek: We’ve really been preparing the whole season, but especially now that we’re getting even closer to game day. We’re going to start getting our scouting reports out and get ready to focus specifically on their personnel.

Santaromita: Is there any pressure to make the quarterfinals for the fourth straight year?

Mrazek: We don’t really talk about it, but I think it’s something that we've got to match. Not only that, we've got to push through that. I feel like in the past teams have gotten to the quarterfinals and you think last year’s team did it and people kind of get comfortable. We need to push through that and fight for a state championship.

Santaromita: How do you improve on the 5-4 record LT has had the past two regular seasons?

Mrazek: Our coaching staff talks a lot about eliminating the kind of rollercoaster play that we’ve had. We need to come out fast and keep that intensity throughout the whole year because we have the skill and the players on this team that we should be winning every game we play. We just need to execute.

Santaromita: How do you replace a dynamic player like Matthew Harris?

Mrazek: I think we've got plenty of players coming back this year, myself and Sam (Shea) at receiver as well as Marcell Kellum. We've got a few guys coming back. We've got a lot of experience last year. I think in terms of playmaking ability we’ll be just fine this year.

Santaromita: What do you expect from this team?

Mrazek: We’re going to come out hot. Don’t expect any rollercoaster play from us this year.

Santaromita: Is it a point of pride to play in the deep West Suburban Silver?

Mrazek: Definitely. Just about every team we play makes the 8A playoffs.

When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: Bennett Field, 4900 S. Willow Springs Road, Western Springs
2012 records: Lyons Township 7-5, Warren 5-5
Outlook: Warren is the first of eight teams on LT's schedule that made the playoffs in 2012. The Blue Devils have made the playoffs in 12 of the last 14 years. Warren typically runs a spread offense, but new starters at quarterback and running back make the Blue Devils more of an unknown.
