Girls golf previews: Downers South Mustangs move on minus seniors

Downers Grove North, Westmont building for future after graduation losses

Girls golfers from across the area are on the course for the 2013 season. The season has just started, but the goal for individuals and teams throughout the state is to make the trek to the Decatur area Oct. 18 to 19 for the Class A and AA state championship tournaments.

Downers Grove South Mustangs

Conference: West Suburban Gold

Home course: Downers Grove Park District, 2420 Haddow Ave., Downers Grove

2012 results: 9th in regional

Coach: Jeff Bryant

Top golfers:

Danielle Heffernan sr.

Sarah Hodges jr.

Carrie Packard jr.

Maddie Pojasek jr.

Bridget Ruder sr.

What to watch:

Tiffany Boak and Sara Uhlir, sectional tournament qualifiers last season, have graduated with Bridget Ruder and Danielle Heffernan emerging as senior leaders so far. Head coach Jeff Bryant identified juniors Sarah Hodges, Carrie Packard and Maddie Pojasek as ready to compete at the varsity level and he also said several juniors and sophomores are on the verge of being varsity contributors. However, Bryant emphasized that improvement will be a buzzword for his squad.

“We lost a few key seniors and will need to dig deep to fill their shoes,” the coach said. “The competition within the team will be fierce for playing spots and it will be important that we improve as the season progresses. I think we have a lot of potential, but that will have to be proven out on the course. Our team goal is to work hard and surprise a few teams along the way.

Downers Grove North Trojans

Conference: West Suburban Silver

Home course: Downers Grove Park District, 2420 Haddow Ave., Downers Grove

2012 results: 8th in regional

Coach: Jackie McCormick

What to watch:

A quartet of senior golfers have graduated, but in their place a new foursome – Mary Doro, Grace Fleming, Abbey Radigan and Jamie Sebo – could takes the leadership reins.

The Trojans should be battle tested by the time the postseason rolls around after regular season dual meets against Lyons Township, Naperville Central, Benet and Hinsdale Central.

Westmont Sentinels

Conference: Interstate Eight

Home course: Twin Lakes, 400 W. 59th St., Westmont

2012 results: 4th in regional

Coach: Marc DeLisle

Top golfers:

Sarah Bayne so.

Katie Charlton sr.

Devin Kapusta so.

Audrey Proctor sr.

Kara Sedivy so.

What to watch:

Three senior leaders – Megan Bennett, Angelica Rendek and Megan Seratt – have moved on and left a bit of a void in the process. Katie Charlton and Audrey Proctor now are the senior leaders, but beyond that duo, the Sentinels have an eye toward the future.

“We are going to be a young team with a lot of potential in the next few years,” coach Marc DeLisle said. “So our main goal this year is to improve our scores to become more competitive with other area schools.”

If improvement takes place during the course of the season, which began with Monday’s dual meet against Plano, DeLisle believes contending for a conference title and sending golfers to the sectional tournament could be possibilities.

Benet Redwings

Conference: East Suburban Catholic

Home course: River Bend Golf Club, 5900 S. Route 53, Lisle

2012 results: 4th at regional

Coach: Tony LaScala

What to watch: The Redwings were on the verge of moving on from the regional tournament to the sectional last fall but came up just short. They will get a good look at their likely postseason competition as they play Lemont, Downers Grove North, Naperville Central and Wheaton Warrenville South in the first three weeks of the season.
