WHAT TO WATCH

BREAKING THE STREAK: It's been 10 games and more than 22 months since York last won a football game. There's no escaping that until the Dukes win again. They enter Week 1 as favorites against Clark, but until they actually get that win, it's something that has been on the minds of the Duke players. Senior captain Joe Helton said they heard people driving by practice yelling "0-9" at the players.

“We’re 10 times better than last year’s team and we’re going to come out and have fun and we’re going to win," Helton said.

FULL OFFSEASON: York coach Steve Nye took over the program in April 2012 and wasn't able to get started on an offseason program until May. Nye said coupling that with an inexperienced team that relied on sophomores and juniors made for a difficult situation. This time around, the Dukes expect big improvement with a more experienced team that put in the work during the offseason and is more familiar with the coaching staff.

“It was hard for him to try and come in and teach us his system because he came in so late in the year," said senior linebacker Joe Helton. "Now that’s all changed.”

BLOOMING ROSE: Charlie Rose is taking over as the Dukes' quarterback this season. The senior was a backup on varsity for the past two seasons and also was a regular starter on the boys basketball team last winter. Rose will lead the offense under new offensive coordinator, Jim Nudera. Nudera was the head coach of Oak Park-River Forest for 12 years. Nudera's son, Jim Jr., played quarterback and graduated from York in 2011. The elder Nudera is bringing in a hard-nosed mentality.

“He’s basically like a drill sergeant for our offense and that's exactly what we needed," Helton said.

COACH'S QUOTE
