Boys golf preview: Raiders eye return trip to state

The 2013 boys golf season is underway and as teams across the area tee it up, the ultimate destination is the Bloomington-Normal area Oct. 18 to 19 for the state championship tournaments.

Glenbard West

Conference: West Suburban Silver

Home course: Village Links of Glen Ellyn, 485 Winchell Way

2012 results: 2-4 WSS, 5th place

Coach: Paul Hezlett

Top golfers:

Michael Anderson jr.

John Bertane sr.

Drew Carlson sr.

Will Hanson sr.

What to watch: A year ago, Glenbard West finished seventh at the challenging Class 3A West Chicago regional, which featured eventual state champ Hinsdale Central.

The Hilltoppers had a sectional qualifier in Will Hanson, who returns to the squad this fall along with fellow seniors John Bertane and Drew Carlson and junior Michael Anderson. Freshman Kevin Nelson also should be an immediate contributor.

“We hope to be much more competitive this year,” coach Paul Hezlett said. “As usual, the competition in the [conference] will be fierce. Hinsdale Central is the reigning state champion and Lyons Township came in third in 2012. I am excited to see how much we can improve over the next six weeks.”

Glenbard South Raiders

Conference: Metro Suburban

Home course: Cantigny, 27W270 Mack Road, Wheaton

2012 results: 1st in regional, 3rd in sectional, 6th in Class 2A

Coach: Scott Iliff

Top golfers:

Christopher Dufort so.

John Marks sr.

Russell Matos so.

Rob Prioletti sr.

Steve Robinson sr.

T.J. Scalf sr.

Michael Wittenberg jr.

What to watch: Glenbard South heads into the fall with high expectations after the Raiders placed sixth at the Class 2A state meet in 2012.

The squad returns four of its top six golfers from that group, including sophomore Russell Matos, who finished in a tie for 12th individually. Also back is Christopher Dufort (tie for 24th), Michael Wittenberg (tie for 37th) and Rob Prioletti (tie for 94th).

“We’ve been working pretty hard all summer,” coach Scott Iliff said. “We do need depth. It turned out last year that some of the guys stepped up that weren’t always every day guys. If we keep that depth, our top three returning players should lead us down there, but that is a long ways away.”

St. Francis Spartans

Conference: Suburban Christian

Home course: Cantigny, 27W270 Mack Road, Wheaton

2012 results: 7-3 dual meet record

Coach: Greg Baresel

Top golfers:

Dan Mochel sr.

John Stolte sr.

Johnathan Nocek so.

Andy Oleniczak sr.

Dan Zurawski sr.

What to watch: The Spartans are coming off a successful 2012 campaign that saw the team place fourth at the Montini Class 2A regional, just six strokes behind a sectional qualifying berth.

The best news for the St. Francis comes from the fact that each of the team’s five individual sectional qualifiers return this fall, including the senior duo of John Stolte and Dan Mochel, who later advanced to the state meet. Mochel placed 55th at state while Stolte was 74th. Johnathan Nocek is also back.

“We have potential to do great things this coming year,” coach Greg Baresel said. “We are returning all of our players from last year and with juniors Pat Mochel, Sean Doherty, and Jake Lane being added to the varsity team we have plenty of depth. I see us competing well against the top schools in the area, and I am looking forward to see what happens this postseason.”
