Chicago Red Stars officially eliminated from postseason following loss
Washington Spirit win 1-0; weather delay cuts game short
BOYDS, Maryland – The Washington Spirit's tough defense — aided by the weather — ended the Chicago Red Stars' hopes of playoff berth.
The Red Stars suffered a 1-0 loss in the National Women's Soccer League game Wednesday, and were officially eliminated from postseason contention. They still have two games left in the regular season, including Saturday's home finale.
After a scoreless first half Wednesday, the Red Stars (7-8-5) pushed the attack but couldn't find the back of the net. The Spirit rushed on the counter-attack and tallied what would hold up as the game-winning goal in the 58th minute. Lightning was spotted in the 76th minute, leading to an hour-and-20-minute delay. When the teams were allowed back on the field, they got in just four more minutes of the game before lightning was sighted again and the game was called due to a stadium curfew rule.
The Red Stars head back to Chicago for their final home match of the season against Sky Blue FC at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex. The evening will mark Fan Appreciation Night. All fans will have opportunities to win prizes during the game and there will also be a live, in-game silent jersey auction for a chance to bid on the Red Stars game-worn home jerseys. Tickets are available for Saturday’s match by visiting the Red Stars' website or calling 773-697-8699.
