Villa Park to host Grand Prix bike race

LOMBARD – Cyclists will descend on Villa Park the weekend of Aug. 18 when the village hosts the 2013 Villa Park Grand Prix Bicycle Race, featuring amateur and professional bikers in a series of races throughout the day. The event is organized by RDS Cycling.

The village held the event last year and this year the first races will begin at 9 a.m. and will conclude shortly after the final race begins at 3:20 p.m.

All races will begin near the corner of Yale Avenue and Park Boulevard and travel in a clockwise loop along Park Boulevard, Princeton Avenue, Washington Street and Harvard Avenue.

During the event, several roads will be closed to vehicle traffic including Park Boulevard between Michigan and Ardmore avenues, Princeton Avenue between Park Boulevard and Madison Street, Washington Street between Ardmore and Michigan avenues and, Harvard Avenue between the Prairie Path and Madison Street and Woodrow Avenue at Michigan Avenue.

Members of the Villa Park Police Department and volunteers will be stationed at the intersections near closed streets to help detour drivers.

The grand prix is free and residents are encouraged to come watch the races throughout the day.
