College students, teachers continue Berwyn summer tutoring program
BERWYN – A free summer reading program offered at a Berwyn church will be continuing efforts to better prepare students for school as they add more specialized instructors to help students.
"I started this after I graduated last year," said Amanda Gerald, who adapted a tutoring program she developed while student teaching for a summer program in Berwyn last year.
The program is offered at each site through the help of Elmhurst College Niebuhr Center for Faith and Action, which focuses on social action and community service. First United Church in Oak Park also provides funding specifically for the Berwyn program. Last year, the reading program allowed Elmhurst students of all majors to tutor, but this year, tutors are limited to education majors or graduates.
