DOWNERS GROVE – The Downers Grove home where a man allegedly killed his wife and then himself on July 19 was reportedly burglarized this week.

Family members cleaning the home of Thomas F. Smith and Jennifer M. Smith, 6211 Park Ave., told police the residence was in order Monday following the murder-suicide. The next day they noticed someone had placed a fold-out step stool underneath a ceiling attic hatch, and that an exterior door had been forced open.

A brand new Craftsman sawzall and a brand new Stihl chain saw, both still in the box, were reported missing, along with a brand new tool box. All the knives, forks and spoons were also reported missing from the kitchen drawer. The tools and toolbox were valued at $200 each, the silverware was valued at $100 and damage to the door was estimated at $40.

Police did not name any suspects.

The bodies of Thomas and Jennifer Smith were found in the home during a well-being at the request of a family member at 2 p.m. July 19.

The Smiths have an 11-year-old daughter, according to authorities. The child was not home at the time of the incident, is unharmed and is staying with relatives.
