CICERO – Morton East High School has been named the grand prize winner and recipient of $2,500 in the Land O'Lakes Midwest Dairy Council Hero's Cheesy Challenge contest.

The council partnered with Land O' Lakes to reward Illinois students for working with their school's nutrition director or adult advisers to create a video of a cheesy meal or snack celebrating a local hero.

At Morton East, that hero is local artist Victor Montañez, who painted murals at the school.

Elvira Michalek, director of Nutritional Program District 201, and Betty Tinken, food service manager at Morton East, and students developed a number of healthy snacks and recipes.

The submitted videos where evaluated based upon the use of reduced fat, reduced sodium cheese, creativity of the snack, use of a local hero and creativity of the video by an expert panel of judges that included dietitians, a chef and a dairy farmer representative.

The cash reward will be used to upgrade the cafeteria, or for the purchase of cafeteria equipment.

As part of the honor, a former NFL player and an NFL mascot will be visiting Morton East in the fall in recognition of the award.

The award winning video can be seen on YouTube.
