DuPage Metra Board appointee Darley resigns

Metra Board of Directors member Paul Darley has resigned, according to a news release from the DuPage County Board.

County Board President Dan Cronin accepted his resignation July 30, according to a board statement. Darley cited the approval of a $718,000 severance package awarded to former Metra CEO Alex Clifford and the surrounding controversy as his reason for stepping down. Clifford said he was forced out of his position for resisting political pressure from House Speaker Mike Madigan and others.

"No one was happy with it, but we accepted it at the recommendation of our legal counsel. As hard as it is to swallow, the settlement was in the best interest of our riders, Metra employees and taxpayers," he said in his letter of resignation.

Cronin said in a release that he "regretfully" accepted Darley's resignation.

Darley is the second member of the Metra board to resign in recent weeks. His resignation was preceded by that of Mike McCoy, who left the board July 19.
