Darien Police Chief Ernest Brown says sexual assault allegations are false

DARIEN – The Darien police chief has been accused of sexually assaulting and harassing a woman while he was a Chicago Police Department commander.

According to a recent lawsuit, Chief Ernest Brown was accused in Centeria Moore-Powell's lawsuit against the city of Chicago.

"The allegations are false, but Chicago is addressing it being the defendant and that's the major reason I'm reluctant to speak on it because it is a Chicago case," Brown said.

In a written complaint filed June 13, Moore-Powell is seeking damages in excess of $300,000, in addition to compensatory damages, loss of earnings and attorney's fees.

Moore-Powell claims that in 2005 she complained to Brown's superiors that he had sexually assaulted and harassed her. The lawsuit states that in April of that year the city of Chicago had Moore-Powell submit to a psychological evaluation.

In 2006, Brown told the Cook County resident she would be transferred to another district against her request.

The court date is set for Aug. 13.
