Cicero boy dies after shooting, police on the hunt
CICERO – Cicero police are searching for the killer of a 17-year-old boy who was fatally wounded in front of a pizza parlor at about 9 p.m. Friday.
Jonathan Melquiades, of the 5900 block of West 16th Street, was pronounced dead at 4:41 p.m. Saturday at Loyola University Medical Center, after being shot in the head Friday night.
Witnesses said the gunman came out of an alley nearby and fired several shots at a group of young people and children standing in front of Del Rio Pizzeria, 5938 W. 16th St.
Melquiades was shot once in the head. The attacker then fled the scene on foot.
Another 17-year-old youth was shot in the leg in the attack. He was treated and released from Loyola Medical Center.
Town spokesman Ray Hanania said police are aggressively searching for the victim's killer.
"Being so close to [Chicago], we work extra hard to crackdown on street gangs, and a part of our success is attributed to the support that we receive from residents who are willing to stand up and be counted," Hanania said.
Police are requesting any information or witnesses to come forward and assist by calling 708-652-2130 or the confidential Cicero Police Hotline at 708-863-2677.
