Glenbard East's Jaron Hall took over as the Rams' marquee player in the summer.

LOMBARD – After having a senior-heavy squad last season, Glenbard East boys basketball might be dealing with a young squad in the winter.

The Rams completed the summer season in the beginning of July and coach Scott Miller had to break in a lot of new players after a number of key seniors graduated from last year’s DuPage Valley Conference and regional winning team.

“We’re kind of in a rebuilding phase and we’re going to have some young kids so it was a great opportunity for them to get some experience,” Miller said.

The lone contributor back from last year’s squad is Jaron Hall. The senior guard was East’s top scorer in summer league play and will need to be a do-it-all type player.

“Jaron is going to have to step up,” Miller said. “He had a great summer. He kind of finished off his season and took off from there. He’s going to be a leader, he’s going to be a scorer and he’s going to be our point guard.”

Aside from Hall, a pair of other seniors, Spencer Trefilek and Tyler Behrendt, stepped into bigger roles during the summer.

After that it was all about the youth movement. Sophomores Patrick Peterkin and Jack Grigat along with freshman Mike Finley found their way onto the varsity team in summer action and could be names to watch down the road.

The Rams hosted a shootout and played in the Riverside Brookfield summer league to get as many games in as possible and give Miller a chance to see what he has going forward.

“Obviously we want to win, but we want to speed up the development of our younger guys as best we can,” Miller said. “We want them to learn the speed of the varsity level. Those are things that happen over the course of the summer.”
