School of the Art Institute students help restore buildings in Oak Brook

OAK BROOK – Students from the graduate program in historic restoration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago recently worked at two sites in Oak Brook – the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County's Mayslake Peabody Estate and the Oak Brook Historical Society's Old Butler School.

Students stripped century-old paint, repaired brick facades and created delicate plaster details. Each summer since 2010, a partnership among the three organizations has provided students with hands-on experience in their field and helped transform two aged structures.

Both properties are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and are open to the public.

Mayslake Peabody Estate encompasses several structures, including a 39-room mansion completed in 1921 by Chicago architect Benjamin H. Marshall.

This year's restoration class worked on portion of the servants' wing of Mayslake Hall, the original mansion. When completed, the space will help the public understand what it was like to live and work in a country estate during the Gilded Age.
