PORTLAND, Ore. – Playing in a nationally televised game Sunday on FOX Soccer, the Chicago Red Stars staged a big comeback to salvage a 3-3 tie against the Portland Thorns.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime and 2-0 early in the second half, Alyssa Mautz halved the deficit when she scored from the top of the 18-yard box in the 60th minute. The Thorns went back ahead 3-1 three minutes later, but the Red Stars (6-7-5) continued to battle.

Red Stars defender Rachel Quon found Mautz with a pass toward the back post, and Mautz headed it past Portland keeper Karina Leblanc to make it a 3-2 game in the 75th minute.

Pressing the issue in the offensive third late in the game, Julianne Sitch lobbed a ball over Leblanc to draw the Red Stars even in the 86th minute.

Sunday’s come-from-behind performance came on the heels of a 4-1 loss to Seattle Reign FC on July 25 in Seattle. It was Chicago’s first loss since June 29, which also came against Reign FC in Seattle.

The Red Stars return to the Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex to face Seattle at 6 p.m. It is the next-to-last home game of the season for Chicago, which closes out the home slate Aug. 10 when it hosts Sky Blue FC at 6 p.m.
