GLEN ELLYN – Beginning Aug. 1, collection rates for Glen Ellyn's weekly residential solid waste program will increase.
Monthly curbside service rates will increase by $1.70 to $1.80, depending on the size of residents' garbage cans, according to village records. Rates for rear door service will increase by $1.80 to $1.95. Stickers for yard waste will cost $2.40, a 5 cent increase.
The rates were updated as part of the village's contract negotiations with Republic Services, officials said. The changes also reflect an annual adjustment based on the Chicago area consumer price index of 1.5 percent.
Monthly payments include a base amount, as well as supplementary rates for branch and brush collection, toter replacement, clean sweep, administration and a recycling rebate, according to village records.
Part of the reason for increased rates is the reduction of the recycling rebate, which occurred due to a decrease in recycling during the past year, officials said.
The village also has canceled its unlimited clean sweep collection day, starting spring 2014.
The day was canceled because participation has declined significantly during the past 10 years, officials said. Funding is needed in other areas, such as preparation for storm events that would require additional branch and brush cleanup or special refuse collections.
After the final collection next spring, residents will be able to dispose of large or bundled items at the curb with one refuse sticker per item or bundle.
