Bergendorf: Banish those summer blues
With children's boredom running rampant as the novelty of summer vacation fades, Wood Dale has an explosion of activities Aug. 4 through 11 to erase those summer blues.
A week of summer fun begins by discovering hidden gems at the Flea Market on Aug. 4 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Yesterday's Farm Museum, located at 850 N. Wood Dale Road. From pink depression glass to handmade jewelry, each table is jam-packed with items looking to become your newest treasure.
The Wood Dale Police Department, in cooperation with several community partners, sponsors National Night Out on Aug. 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. Located at 404 N. Wood Dale Road on the field adjacent to the Police Department and the Wood Dale Park District Pool, it's a night where free is the magic word. There are free games, free hot dogs, free ice cream and free swimming at the Wood Dale Park District pool.
Kids can get up close and personal with local police officers, and safely satisfy their curiosity of what the inside of a police car looks like. And, those aspiring young baseball players with a good aim can try to dunk their favorite police officer in the ever-popular dunk tank ... without learning what the inside of a police car looks like!
If you need a little library inside time, Steve Belliveau, from Get Excited About Science, is the Wood Dale Public Library District's featured Family Entertainment Night performer on Aug. 8 at 7 p.m.. Go on a journey of discovery as Steve presents large scale science demonstrations that will amaze all ages.
There's also Prairie Fest, which runs Aug. 8 through 11 in the Wood Dale Town Square, located at the corner of Wood Dale Road and Commercial Street. Whether you enjoy the sedate spin of the Ferris Wheel, or the dizzying spin of the Tilt-a-Whirl, a Carnival Mega Pass can be purchased online at www.wooddale.com. While children twirl away on rides, you can rock the weekend away listening to great regional bands. Be sure to see the 5:45 p.m. show that Saturday featuring Wood Dale's own John Forrest on bass in Heartache Tonight, an Eagles Tribute Band, and stick around for the dazzling firework display.
It's an exhilarating week of summer fun; giving everyone the ability to complete the ever popular back to school essay, "In 100 words or less, describe what you did over summer vacation."
P.S., did I mention that the first day of school at Fenton High School is Aug. 14 and Wood Dale School District #7 and Holy Ghost School begins Aug. 21?
Don't panic. There's still time to squeeze in some last minute fun!
