Fountaindale prepares for its largest event of the year
BOLINGBROOK – When Fountaindale Public Library staff planned their 2012 Bolingbrook community ice cream social, they expected a couple hundred residents to attend the event.
But, summer’s seasonably scorching heat, combined with the lure of free ice cream, food and drink sampling and a plethora of children’s activities, yielded the library’s largest event of the year – attended by more than 1,200 residents.
Fountaindale Public Library Communications Manager Chrissy Little said what started as a small ice cream outing eventually spiraled into a full-fledged, communitywide evening party.
“Last year’s ice cream social was the first time we had done a large outdoor event,” Little said. “We promoted it quite a bit in the community, but the turnout was astounding. This year, we are pulling out all the stops.”
The Bolingbrook library is anticipating up to 2,000 residents to be on hand during this year’s ice cream social – which will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday in the Fountaindale parking lot adjacent to Bulldog Park.
Monday’s ice cream social is free for everyone and, upon entry, each attendee will be given a ticket that can then be redeemed at the Windy City Ice Cream truck. This year, instead of just ice cream, Windy City is offering ice cream bars, popsicles, ice cream sandwiches and other frozen treats.
Additionally, Nancy’s Pizza, bd’s Mongolian Grill and Brook’s Cafe will hand out free food sampling and refreshments.
Event activities include an inflatable slide, music, games, a puppet show, a climbing wall and a trackless train provided by the Bolingbrook Park District. Patrons will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to soak Fountaindale Executive Director Paul Mills, who will sit atop a dunk tank for the duration of the evening.
For Little, the ice cream social is a perfect event for the whole family and a great way to start the work week.
“It will be a really fun family atmosphere, an event for people of all ages,” Little said. “Because who doesn’t love free ice cream?”
Fountaindale will close its drive from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday to accommodate the ice cream social.
