COUNTRYSIDE – The Countryside Police Department is accepting applications for its 12-week Citizen's Police Academy.

The academy, which starts Aug. 20, gives participants a firsthand look at the operation of the police department. Each week, a different department staff member will present a topic, such as patrol functions, community policing, interactive crime scene investigation and criminal investigations.

The goal of the program is to improve lines of communication with the community while providing participants with a better understanding of police work.

Classes run from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays, except for the first two classes, which will be held on Tuesdays. The program is held at the police department, 5550 East Ave.

A graduation ceremony will take place at the end of the program.

Participants must be 18 or older and live, work or volunteer in Countryside. Applications can be picked up in person at the police department or online at www.countrysidepolice.org, or by calling 708-352-2171.
