BENSENVILLE – Get ready to run. The Bensenville Park District's 10th Annual Red, White & Blue John Kurtz 5K Run/Walk will honor veterans in August.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. Aug. 3 in Pines Park, located at 4N500 Church Road in Bensenville. The 5K will wind through the streets of the White Pines Subdivision in unincorporated Addison Township. The fee is $20 before the race day and $25 on the day of the race. The race is limited to 400 participants and goodie bags.

The event theme will honor veterans and help raise awareness for the Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies program. This program helps injured, ill or wounded veterans with the transition to civilian life through health and fitness training, as well as networking opportunities.

"We couldn't think of a better [cause] than getting these servants the assistance they so desperately need," Race Director Lauri Page said.

During the event, John Kurtz, head coach for Fenton High School's boys track & field and cross country, will be recognized for over 40 years of coaching. Kurtz has also coached several all-state athletes and won conference championships.

The event will also provide refreshments, lunch, a performance from the band AARP and camouflage t-shirts. Top finishers in different categories will be presented with awards.

Pre-registration can be submitted online at www.signmeup.com/90252 and at Bensenville Park District's Deer Grove Leisure Center, 1000 W. Wood St. Entry forms can be found at www.bensenvilleparkdistrict.org and faxed to 630-766-9280. Participants must pre-register by 2 p.m. Aug. 2.
