DOWNERS GROVE – Stanford University students brought the innovative spirit of Silicon Valley to Downers Grove this weekend with the “educational build-mobile” called SparkTruck.

SparkTruck was started by students at the university who were curious about education and technology and now are touring the country presenting free workshops to kids.

Both initial sessions scheduled for Sunday in Downers Grove sold out, as did a third session added to meet demand.

“People were, across the board, very enthusiastic and very excited about it,” said Kristi Kattapong, spokeswoman for Friends of the Gifted and Talented of Downers Grove.

During the workshops, younger children made “Vibrobots” – feathery creatures that scoot around using a battery and pager motor.

Older children participated in a Lego robotics session.

The event was hosted by the Friends of the Gifted and Talented of Downers Grove and the village of Downers Grove.
