Police discovered two dead bodies Friday in a house on Park Avenue in Downers Grove.

DOWNERS GROVE – The stabbing deaths of Downers Grove residents Thomas F. Smith, 41, and his wife Jennifer M. Smith, 39, were the result of an apparent murder-suicide, according to Downers Grove police.

Police said it appears that Thomas Smith killed his wife and then committed suicide. Both husband and wife most likely died of multiple stab wounds, the DuPage County Coroner's Office said.

Their bodies were discovered in their home at 6211 Park Ave. during a well-being check at 2 p.m. Friday at the request of a relative, Downers Grove Police Det. Mike Willison said.

The couple had no previous history of domestic violence, according to Willison. Police did not say what time they believe the murder-suicide occurred.

The Smiths have an 11-year-old daughter, according to authorities. The child was not home at the time of the incident, is unharmed and is staying with relatives.

Police said that there was never a public threat associated with the incident.

An investigation of the deaths is ongoing.
