A Roselle woman was killed Wednesday afternoon in an accident on Interstate 55 involving three semi-trucks and three passenger vehicles.

Harriett E. Herrera, 68, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Will County Coroner's office.

One person was airlifted from the scene and others were taken to area hospitals, Illinois State Police said.

Neither the number nor extent of injuries has been disclosed by State Police. None of the vehicles involved had passengers.

At 4:40 p.m., three passenger vehicles and two truck tractor semi-trailers were stopped in heavy traffic in the northbound lanes on I-55, a half mile north of North River Road, an area under construction.

A truck tractor semi-trailer traveling north did not stop and crashed into one of the stopped passenger vehicles, sending it into the other vehicles involved.

The first passenger vehicle struck was driven by Herrera, who was pronounced dead at 7:11 p.m., according to the coroner's office. An autopsy Thursday confirmed she died from "multiple injuries" resulting from the collision.

Both northbound lanes on I-55 at North River Road were closed until about 9:30 p.m. Northbound traffic was diverted onto River Road toward Illinois 53.

State police continue to investigate and have not announced any charges.
