DIY Teen Theatre actors Tatum Langley (center) as Princess Fiona, with CeCe Lampa as Teen Fiona (right)  and Michelle Maiers as Young Fiona (right) have rehearsed five days a week in preparation for opening day of "Shrek the Musical" July 25.

ELMHURST – DIY Teen Theatre in Elmhurst will be the first non-professional company in the area to perform "Shrek the Musical."

The production was arranged by 53 local teens and pre-teens will perform on stage and an 11-piece orchestra will accompany them with hits from the movie like "I'm a Believer."

The kids handled nearly all aspects of the show. They planned the budget, obtained the production license, ran auditions, created costumes and taught music and dance all within six weeks.

Performances will be held at the Valentino Center at Visitation School, 851 South York Road. Tickets are $9 for adults and $7 students. They can only be purchased at the door. Shows will be July 25 and 26 at 7 p.m., and July 27 and 28 at 2 p.m.
