ELMHURST – This weekend's Elmhurst Cycling Classic is part of a larger cycling series in the area.

The Prairie State Cycling Series began last weekend in Kenosha, Wis. The series has already attracted international competitors. Evgeny Kovalev from Russia won the first race with an impressive sprint finish. He also competed at the 2012 London Olympics.

Organizers expect teams from both Germany and Russia to ride the Elmhurst course Friday. Plenty of U.S. professionals are also riding in the seven races that make up the Prairie State Cycling Series. Robert White of Wisconsin won the Crystal Lake Pro Men's race.

Organizers expect thousands of spectators and about 500 competitors Friday for the Elmhurst stage of the series.
