WHEATON – During fiscal year 2013, the DuPage County Sheriff's Office ran tobacco compliance checks at 41 businesses throughout unincorporated DuPage County. During these checks, deputies with the sheriff's office accompanied minors as they attempted to buy tobacco products at local businesses. Of the businesses that were checked, four sold tobacco to minors and received citations.
These businesses included 7-Eleven, 2S651 Lloyd Ave., Lombard; BP Wash-N-Go, 2S780 Route 53, Glen Ellyn; Wings Auto Repair, 22W070 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn; and BP Gas and Food, 2231 Maple Ave., Downers Grove.
The tobacco checks were completed thanks to a grant from the Illinois Liquor Control Commission, which also requires sheriff deputies to provide education programs for all tobacco retailers before running compliance checks on the businesses.
With nearly 20 percent of our high school students smoking, keeping tobacco out of the hands of our youth is a priority," said Sheriff John E. Zaruba. "As parents, we strive every day to protect our children from the temptations of illegal or age-restricted products for their health and safety."
