Letter: Hometown pride on the 4th of July

To the Editor:

I have always appreciated the sense of community in Wheaton, but never more than at the 4th of July parade.

Minutes before the start of the parade, an older woman fell on the railroad tracks just as the gates went down and a freight train was approaching. She was unable to get up and a number of people ran to help, potentially risking their own wellbeing.

The Wheaton Police officer who was at the corner of Hale and Front streets sprinted to help and carried the woman off the tracks, literally seconds before the train came through. I wish I knew the officer's name, as he is a true hero, as are the other citizens who rushed to her aid.

The city of Wheaton should be proud.
